Some people feel like the only way to get the best is to pay for it. If a hamburger cost $2.00 and another hamburger cost $8.00, these type of people will automatically choose the $8 hamburger. They think they are better people and have something better if they pay outrageous amounts for something. Somehow they imagine that the 2 dollar hamburger came from a lesser cow. They feel like they are separating themselves from the riff-raff, the people who don't know any better.

Same with computers and computer software. There are many computer enthusiast's who consider people like myself who buy the best that is available in computer's at around the 200, 300, or 400 dollar range to be idiotic and not wise when it comes to computers. They imagine themselves to be superior because they have bought 3,000 or 4,000 dollar computers. This makes them automatically more intelligent they feel.

And so it goes with computer software, as can be seen in this thread from just a couple of posters, they consider only virus detectors that you pay for to be of any value. They automatically imagine that any software that is free has to be ripoff, a crippled and unreliable product and you will have to PAY to get the good version of it.

These type of personalities are behind the times when it comes to computer software. They have been tricked and have "bought" into the lie. Why pay anything at all for a product, even if it is a small amount, when you can get something in all probability better for free? Most free products that have a good reputation and are not spyware laden and are well liked are leaner, cleaner, faster, smoother, and even more aesthetically pleasing than the behemoth's that many pay programs have become today.
