Journey,

Nothing gets by Avast, it is a malware person. It doesn't detect spyware, but you don't need all of that in one monster program. Break it up and everything will go a lot smoother.

If you need a good spyware program, try Spybot and Ad-Aware, just do a search for them if you don't already have them. Have you noticed that everything I list is free? All the best programs do seem to be free if you know where to look.

Avast scans all e-mail attachments, scripts, inside archived files, real time protection, every file you even think about clicking on while on the Internet. Or while just browsing files within your computer, every file that is clicked on is scanned. I don't have a need for it, but there are also features that allow you to be protected while chatting, etc...

AVG is very good also, I have tried it and chose Avast personally. The one thing I disliked about AVG is that it would not scan files in real time. I may be wrong about this, if I am I fully expect someone more familiar with AVG than I am to better buttist you with its features. For instance, say you are downloading an infected file by accident from some web site, Avast will not allow it to even be downloaded, it will catch it before you have a chance to click on the file.

There is no firewall, but virus detectors were not meant for this capability anyway. That is what is wrong with the other ones, they try to do way to much and don't concentrate on what made them famous, which is detecting viruses.

If you need a firewall, get something like Kerio or Zone Alarm.

Zone Alarm is very powerful and recommended by people such as Steve Gibson of Gibson Research.

Remote Access Software
not sure if logmein.com allows you to send a cntrl+alt+del but you should be able to bring up the task manager via a command...

These mega packages like Norton and McAfee that try to include everything in one, more times than not simply clutter up and jam up your computer and are too unwieldy.

And as far as making money, all these people make money off of corporations and businesses that buy licenses for hundreds and thousands of computers. They feel like it is their duty to give away freeware versions of their products to further spread the original spirit of the Internet.
