Repair or return for whining fan or 6000 notebook 1125
Every single laptop motherboard sent out by Dell has (or should have) a CD which allows the tech to edit and-or insert the service tag into the BIOS. I've also heard reports...

this depends on how much time you have. clearly the on site repair will be quickest but requires that you are around to meet the technician for an appointment. the repair won't happen instantly as the tech first has to receive the part from dell and it sounds as if that has not been done yet. and of course there is a chance of you getting an incompetent tech, so watch him-her. if you don't like the way things go then you can still return the machine under your 21 day money back warranty.

however if you have time on your side, then i suggest that you first look at the current pricing of your system and then decide if you either accept their replacement machine or if you simply return your machine and purchase new. what i don't like about replacements and motherboard repairs is that they system tag number ends up being different than your original tag number. it is not a big deal for an individual, but when you manage lots of machines it is a nuisance. dell techs are supposed to be equipped with a utility that changes the system tag number but i have yet to meet one that does.
