Every single laptop motherboard sent out by Dell has (or should have) a CD which allows the tech to edit and-or insert the service tag into the BIOS. I've also heard reports that the BIOS security pbuttword feature is disabled until the service tag is entered (I personally don't own a Dell so I can't verify this). After over 150 laptop service calls I have yet to receive a laptop motherboard package that doesn't contain one of these CDs.

Most techs are too lazy after replacing the motherboard to insert the CD, press F12, select "boot from CD", press the number "3", read the service tag number from their service call paperwork and enter the tag twice into the DOS batch file. Hell, some techs are so lazy they won't even take the motherboard out of manufactring mode, thus creating a very annoying "tick" from the keyboard. All he had to do was press Fn-X. I've had some very quick 5-minute calls to do just this procedure :)

However, I won't completely sing the CD's praises; the BIOS updates are usually out of date; Dell burns a million of these CD's and the next day a new BIOS is released. So I either try to access the Internet from the repaired laptop or every few months burn my own CD containing all of Dell's latest BIOS upgrades off the web.

Next time ask the tech if you can keep (or hide from him-her) the CD that comes with the laptop motherboard marked "for dell technician use only".
