speaking of rootkits 1171

Hi!

I think this behavior on Sony's part is completely uncalled for. I can well recall my extreme disappointment when I elected to purchase a physical CD and found it had this disease on it. At the time I just decided that listening to the CD in a conventional player was going to have do. I have made my decisions as to what media players I will be using and what software is loaded on my computer. Sony-F4I's "rootcrap" isn't going to be on any of my systems.

I wrote them a very angry letter regarding the DRM on the disc. Finding an address to send it to was the hard part...I looked around the Sony Music web site for a while before giving up and calling the number inside the disc to report a quality defect. I asked the operator for a mailing address to Sony Music and got one. I did get a reply back...Sony wanted to have the CD back. To date I haven't returned it. (See below for the reason why.)

I'm not sure what reasoning they are using to pbutt this garbage off...how long have CDs have been on the market now alongside the technology to make and share MP3 files? Seeing as CDs do still sell, there must be a few people who buy them...

Anyway, I got good and mad about it before sliding the disc into my Mac mini. From there iTunes was more than happy to rip the CD into standard MP3s. I'm not so desperate as to resort to piracy, but I will use every means at my disposal to circumvent this kind of garbage. Now I've got my fair use rights back.

If you've got one of the CDs that is infested with this so-called "technology" and want to do something about it, here is Sony Music's mailing address:
