Possibly. They would definitely try to flake on rural customers, who offer both lower profit margin AND suffer politically from low population densities.

IBM *NEVER* had a monopoly in microcomputers. IBM *NEVER* had a monopoly in mainframe or minicomputers, but DID engage in numerous illegal trade practices (lying about products in development to dissuade customers from buying compebreastors products that already were already in production, etc.), almost all of which Microsoft has committed, despite the fact that IBM set (losing) precedence in federal court for these behaviors in the 1960's and 70's.

Kodak has never had a monopoly, and has never engaged in criminal restraint-of-trade practices.

Kodak was the first to offer a negative material which was flexible and could be put on a spool, which ended the previous demand that a second photo from the same camera be preceeded by a plate exchange (glbutt or metal negative).

Eastman reinvested his initial profits into research to obtain a dominant position in the photographic market, but has never had a monopoly, not only on the world scale, but not even in the U.S.

Cellular One never had a monopoly.

First != monopoly. Largest != monopoly.

NYSE has **NEVER*** had a monopoly on securities trading.

If anything, NYSE is *exclusive*, not monopolistic.

NYSE has very high standards for a company to meet before even being ALLOWED to be listed on their exchange. Sun is on NASDAQ because they originally couldn't meet NYSE's standards, and just decided not to move, because by the time they did meet NYSE's standards, there were a ton of other nationally-known tech companies on NASDAQ, and decided to stay for easy of locatability for those who want to invest in high-tech businesses.

AMEX has been around for many decades, and has coexisted with NYSE, but has slightly lower requirements for trading.

Also, almost every state in the country has had a local (in-state) exchange as well, to provide for those corporations which cannot meet the standards of NYSE, AMEX or even NASDAQ.

When?

Ford was a late-comer into the market. Ford didn't even build his first car until AFTER the Wright Brothers' were filling airplane contracts for various European armies.

Stanley and others was selling steam-powered vehicles since the late 1880's. A flood of electric cars were in use up until World War 1 -- none of which were made by Ford.

Back in the 1920's, GM was founded by forming a confederation of several already quite successful auto manufacturers (Chevrolet in Detroit, Cadillac in Detroit, Oldsmobile in Lansing, Buick in Flint, Oakland (renamed Pontiac) in Pontiac.

Two other very successful auto companies (Dodge, and Plymouth) merged with Chrysler motors to form Chrysler Corporation.

All of this happened while the Model T had only a moderate slice of the market.

This doesn't even count the very popular at that time companies on Auburn, Cord, and Deusenberg (all in or around Auburn, Indiana) nor the three companies which merged to became the Studebaker Corp. (Studebaker, Nash, and Avanti)

That's a DUopoly, you schmuck.

And before the Democrats and Republicans, there were the Whigs and the Federalists. Both of those parties self-destructed within 4 years of each other, as there was a spontaneous re-alignment of political philosophy which was almost perpendicular to those of the Whigs and Democrats.

Look for this to happen again, very soon.

Back in 1992, when I heard that Clinton had picked Gore as his running mate, I predicted that this was the beginning of the end for the Democrat party. They have been on a downhill slide ever since. I don't give them more than 6 years.

Once the Democrat party implodes, look for the Republicans to break up too, as all of the libertarian-leaning democrats find alliance with their counterpart faction in the Republican party, and the Loony-Left suddenly discovers that they have a LOT more in common with the socialist-minded, regulation-loving "Rockefeller" wing of the Republican party which hates the ideology, spirit, and culture of small to medium-sized businesses and their owners just as much as the socialists do.

After the Republicans and Democrats break up, look for the new alignment to be:

Libertarian-Consbreastutional-originalist

vs.

Socialist-Consbreastution-means-whatever-the-f***-we-hallucinate.

EVERY transportation system in the world is subsidized.

AmTrak needs subsidies because every competing form of transportation is also rediculously subsidized (especially the highly wasteful long-haul trucking industry when compared to the fuel-efficiency of long-haul railroad-delivery combined with local transfer to-from tractor-trailer trucks by either "piggyback" cars or shipping container on flatbed, methods.
