It was perfectly clear. I was just in the mood to point out that the government is pro-monopoly if it happens to suit their needs at the moment. If anything, the government sometimes acts like a giant monopoly....Hmmm.
I'll admit that on some level I agree with this Msft monopoly thing. But "Stacker" was doomed from the start, just like "Ram-Doubler" and "Sideways" and all the other short-lived products. It really does make more sense to have the OS handle data compression and not have a 3rd party "hook" to do it. DR-DOS was doomed IMO because they offered the "same thing" as MS-DOS. There was no real reason to use DR-DOS since it really didn't gain you much of anything. Netscape... Yes they were crushed but their business model of giving away a free browser could only last so long. Given the amount of viruses, worms, etc. It seems to make sense that MS would add some sort of virus protection to Windows. Unfortunatley it needs it. But there are several categories (databases, image processing, source-control, testing & QA, games, CAD-CAM, etc.) where other vendors do very well with or without Msft competing. Msft added "Zip-file" support and CD-burning to XP. Nero, Roxio and PK-Ware are still doing fine so I'm not sure that the virus-stuff is going to kill Symantic and McAfee.
