This is crucial. If you sit the average pedigreed winschill in front of a dedicated Linux server system they would be clueless of how to do the simplest task. Of course they could always go online and find the information, but chances would be they wouldn't even know where to start looking!

This is why so many "system administrators" (READ: M$ Certified Reboot Agents) are scared of Linux, because it shows just how much they don't know, whereas with Windows, you often can just fake it.

For example, if something goes wrong with a Linux system, chances are a reboot isn't going to magically "fix" it. Problems don't arbitrarily pop up on Linux, so if something isn't right, you have to know where to look and what to do and how to do it in order to get it resolved. Wintards aren't used to all this, they are used to just clicking "Yes" and "I Agree" and "Reboot", and often "Replace existing Install?".

This is by design, since Windows is designed to provide as little control and feedback to the end user as possible. Whereas Linux is the exact opposite. With Windows, people are not encouraged or allowed to dig in and get the issues truly *fixed* as they are able to with Linux.

And of course, once issues are fixed on Linux, they stay fixed, unlike Windows where the same issues keep popping up again and again because the underlying problems are never actually resolved.

I don't usually, but... 10032
snips Yes and no... Running any system on quality hardware is going to work better than doing the same on crap...

Many small businesses can't afford or don't need full-time inhouse IT staff, so someone who's primary function is something else is given ancillary duty as the local "tech" because they might have reinstalled Windows on their home computer at some point or installed a modem once.

IOW, totally clueless.

If you can "fake it" with Windows and get by, but not Linux, then Windows is more intuitive than Linux. I have an MSCE friend who decided after discussing Macs with me, though...

"When administered properly" - That's all it takes. This is the difference between someone having an enjoyable, productive, relatively trouble-free Linux experience and someone turning into a DFS.
