If this were true, then MS would outsource their email system, and pretty much everything else.

Since MS would only have to handle MS domains for distributed DNS serving, they could do it with far fewer resources needed than Akamai brings to bear. The fact of the matter is, that even MS, found it cheaper to use Linux for this task, including paying someone else to do so, than doing it internally, with MS software.

Colo brings with it the bandwidth that many offices simply don't have. I have several colo and hosted machines I admin, and each one of them is on a pipe the client simply couldn't afford or get in their office.

Akamai chose Linux, because it made sense, they didn't chose MS-Windows, because either it couldn't handle it, or it was too damn expensive, or both.

Akamai is further evidence that MS claims re TCO are at best, bullpoo, and at worst, out and out lies.
