Why? Better question: Why not? It plays Ogg files just fine, MIDI files, MOD, and WAV files too. Why shouldn't their workstation distro support MP3's if it also supports other media types? I like to listen to music while I'm working, be it administration tasks, writing a test plan, coding, or whatever. Why shouldn't I be able to listen to mp3's while accomplishing my tasks?

Your statement buttumes that there is no need for any type of media play on an enterprise (i.e. business) desktop. Why not remove all forms of media players from the distro? Wait... You can't do that. A lot of businesses train their employees via CD's with video on them. Some broadcast messages from the top brbutt via streaming video or audio. Call centers use media to playback recorded calls when there is a dispute or training issue. And, you all know this, most executives just love having internet radio streaming through their laptops and just might want to watch a bit of love either while in the office behind closed doors, or while away on "business".

No, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to be able to playback mp3's (as well as most other media types) on an enterprise (i.e. "business") workstation.
