I went online to find reviews on the motorcycle boots I purchased last year, just as I asked around for boot suggestions which resulted in a pair of White's Boots a year or so before. But then, neither of these were free, or $25 payless specials. I laid out a considerable sum (for me anyway) on them.

crossover-office, no need to convert to anything. MS-Word on Linux.
If you insist on being able to use MS-Word, you can do that on Linux, with *fewer* differences than MS-Word on OSX.
OSX is only an alternative, if you can afford to buy new (to you anyway) hardware. Linux is often an alternative, even without new hardware.
might work under wine, but I don't know, mostly seems to depend on how well written the software is, the buggier, the worse it works under wine.
