Asia launches cheap PC 10130Dell can probably match that Indian computer. 10k rupees is $230 US. However, that HCL Linux computer that was cited in the original article for 9990 rupees has a catch: you are required to pay an additional 1250 rupees for delivery, installation, and 1 year of after sales service. So, we are really looked at closer to $260 US. The best price I see at Dell right now is $380. That's for a considerably better system: 2.8 GHz P4 vs 1 GHz unspecified processor 256 MB of RAM vs 128 MB 17" LCD vs. 15" CRT Comparing the cheapest 17" LCD at Dell to their 15" CRTs, it looks like the LCD adds about $100. 256 MB of RAM vs. 128 MB is around $20. So, it seems likely Dell could offer a 128 MB system with a 15" CRT for $380-$120, or $260, matching the HCL system, and with a much better processor. Replace that 2.8 GHz P4 with a 1 GHz Celeron, and Dell could almost certainly easily beat 10k rupees. Interestingly, looked at Dell's India site, I don't see any home desktops for sale, though. They only seem to have workstations and servers. Anyone know why? -- --Tim Smith
