Just heard on CNBC at 7:00 AM 11-8-2005:

AMD chips were installed on 60% of all PCs sold.

Keep in mind that AMD took a huge gamble and released chips which would perform best with Linux, which supports 64 bit capabilities, well before Microsoft was ready to release a fully functional 64 bit solution.

As a result, nearly all AMD PCs are almost pure "Linux Plays". They are "Linux Friendly" and often cost substantially more than "Windows Only PC"s which have been discounted to below cost.

This number may have included servers, where AMD-Linux is making a substantial lead, but since most of the PCs sold are desktop and laptop machines, that is a pretty good market. Furthermore, since nearly all of the AMD laptop and desktop machines sold this year were AMD-64 machines, this is a pretty good indicator that AMD-Linux is now dominating the market in terms of annual sales.

Add to these numbers, the number of Intel machines which are also "Linux Friendly", and you can begin to see that Linux is now becoming THE key factor in the profitability of a PC line.
