I'm seeing the word "racist" thrown around a lot here. I'd question people's understanding of what "racism" truly means.

In Debt Management training school, we had many heated discussions (part of the training) about diversity and what racism really means.

People cannot truly be racist unless they're in a position of power where they can alter or affect people's lives.

I'm not saying nobody in this thread can be racist - I'm simply pointing out that the term racism involves a lot more than predujidism or bigotry.

Also, we learned that most of us were, in fact, racist without even realizing it. A good example of this is as follows: +~+~+

The Ghost In The Machine This (sparse file) is possible (don't know.. that's why I asked in the first place). But thinking about this seems like...

I think I am a racist. It is a hard and dangerous admission to make, but it is a problem I have, and the first step to resolving a problem is to acknowledge it. So, here it is: I colour-code people and I stereotype them. That makes me a racist.

I cannot recall the number of times I've walked down the street thinking, "Gad, they're everywhere" and it could be a reference to any ethnic group--Asian (that includes all the countries in Asia, not just China), African, European, American--any visible minority. and majority.

I have nothing against any of these groups. In fact, I have friends of different nationalities and races, and they would be shocked to learn I was racist. But it is not my friends who need to be worried so much as the person on the street, the unknown stranger.

You see, I have found this interesting way to be a racist. My slurs are aimed at People Pictures I don't know, and I think I am the better person because I don't really hurt anyone. or +~+~+

When my colleagues and I were completely honest with ourselves, we could not deny the fact that we shared elements of this type of thinking. These subconscious bits of thinking have been around us since birth.

Joe Feagin and Hernan Vera write:

"Racism is more than a matter of individual prejudice and scattered episodes of discrimination. There is no black (or other minority) racism because there is no centuries-old system of racial subordination and discrimination designed by African Americans to exclude white Americans from full participation in the rights, privileges, and benefits of this society. Minority racism would require not only a widely accepted racist ideology directed at whites, but also the power to systematically exclude whites from opportunities and rewards in major economic, cultural, and political insbreastutions."

...Everyone agrees they can be prejudiced, but the argument is that racism is a power relation--it is not just the thought but the effect of subordinating someone due to their race. Furthermore, racism cannot be separated from racist histories--that is, racism draws upon past inequalities to justify and reify present ones. Since blacks are not and were not in a position of power in America's racial scheme, they cannot cause racially disparate effects and thus cannot be racist. or

Racism only has real meaning when it can be used to oppress people. Yeah, that might sound harsh, and it may hurt some people.s feelings, but people (white people especially) need to get over it. Racism is part of a system. It includes economic oppression, limited social visibility, restricted opportunities, unfair treatment under the law and violent retrobution for those who act out against the system. A black person who calls white people .cracker. may hurt your feelings, but it sure as hell isn.t racism. Prejudice maybe, but it won.t stop you from getting a job, going to school, shopping without harbuttment and a million other things that white people take for granted as their god-given rights.
