I should not, in fact, be able to resell additional licenses to something that I did not create, but I should, and normally do, have the right to resell a license I properly paid for.
Take for instance, a school text book. I am allowed to modify it, i.e. write notes in it, and I am allowed to resell the book when I want.

Bzzt, wrong. Copyright is pretty clear about my rights, the EULA seeks to limit them beyond what I consider reasonable. That's one of the reasons I refuse to use Windows and why I think M$ is bad.

You must be smoking crack again. You need to get a comparison chart. Take a look at www.gnu.org, kde, gnome, and on and on. There are so many programs for Linux-UNIX the numbers are amazing.
Don't forget freedom, control, stability, and security.
The occasional app locking up happens on every platform, how the platform handles such an event is the important thing.
