That's true, I never said otherwise. Dell is already not exclusively in the "Wintel" business since they offer servers with Linux or with no OS at all. There are exclusively "Wintel" only on the desktop.

All of that depends on how much your time is worth, chris. If it is...
Yes, the "noticing" would be the Dell guy noticing that MS was offering him a much cheaper price if he agreed to sell only MS operating systems.
It wasn't exactly about what would best fit the buyer's needs. It was true that most buyers bought Microsoft, but after this "noticing" that trend accelerated a great deal.
They already support at least three versions of Windows and a version of Linux. They already support hundreds if not thousands of different configurations of hardware and software. This is a red herring.
The real reason is that if they advertised and promoted Linux like they do "Wintel" then they would lose marketing dollars from Microsoft, which could potentially cut into their profits. This is a disincentive that is completely unrelated to what the customers do or don't want or what they will or won't pay for. Since Dell is doing fine as they are, they don't want to take that kind of risk.

chrisv Chuckle. Charming fellow. The MS Mafia uses an illegal monopoly, essentially a RICO continuing...
OTOH, in the server market, they would be at a significant disadvantage if they did not offer Linux. The MS marketing dollars are less of a deciding factor because MS does not dominate that market as they do the desktop.
Yes, and I see they've just announced some desktops and laptops with Linux preinstalled. I guess since they aren't doing as well as Dell with the "Wintel" thing it is worth more risk to them.

billwg ... Perhaps from places like here: "Early in the '90s, Microsoft's drastically improved graphical user interface...
More things are true than have been proven in court. Perception matters. If your only defense is "they haven't proven that in court", then maybe what MS does still looks bad, even to you.
You're still being deceptive even in context. The fact that you rambled on for 100 words trying to justify what you said doesn't change that.
