There are many varying personalities out there. Some people thrive on conflict and adversity, and if there is none, they will create some. We are all guilty of this to some degree I'm sure, but some people take it to a whole other level.

I'm sure the behavior of many of the trolls is to them simply a form of entertainment, kind of like how alot of people like to watch the "Jerry Springer Show". There is absolutely no redeeming value to that show whatsoever, and yet it continually maintains high ratings across the nation. Why? Because for some reason humans love controversy and drama, the more the better.

COLA presents a perfect opportunity for persons looking to "stir the pot", so to speak. A popular up and coming technology that by the force of it's presence alone has put it head to head against the reigning controversial King. It's a clbuttic underdog story, and in most cases, people root for the underdog to prevail.

However, if one were to be inclined towards conflict and adversity, what better way than to take up arms against the little guy? You are guaranteed an endless supply of entertainment just by uttering the phrase, "Linux sucks!".

To be fair, many of us are just as guilty as we encourage these persons to continue to frequent this forum by giving them exactly what they are looking for. Like how a kid will throw stones at a hornet's nest with the butturance that each and every time the hornets will work themselves up into a frenzied swarm in zealous defense of their territory. Sure it's dangerous and stupid, but nevertheless very exciting for thrill seekers. So long as the hornets keep swarming, they'll keep doing it.

COLA is like a mecca for trolls because Linux users tend to be very enthusiastic and defensive about their platform of choice. You will not see alot of this kind of enthusiasm amongst Windows users because, frankly, there is not much to be enthusiastic about.

As far as whether these people have lives or not, I'm sure they do. I'm sure some of them have very fulfilling lives, and they may have good jobs, loving spouses, great children, mortgages, etc. OTOH, I'm sure there are some of them that are complete social recluses and fit the concept of the lonely geek living in some dump with poor hygiene and no love life, spending their lives in front of a computer screen.

Whatever their situations, it's really irrelevant in this context. All that matters is their activities in this forum and their motivations for such.
