Well, if Gnome crashed, then you're route out is ctrl-alt-backspace to

I understand that it's the replacement BSOD. Instead of doing a BSOD, WinNT5 does a reboot, so that the BSOD doesn't appear. WinNT5 is renowned for this behaviour.

Fair enough. Perhaps a test with a liveCD like knoppix might be worth a go, or even try a different distro. I'm not familiar with Red Hat, so can't really comment.

Your anecdote is excellent, and I'm quite certain much equipment will give similar excellent service, when used in the same way. I do know, though, that power-on current is very stressful, having spent several years (a long time ago now...) doing component-level maintenance, I can confirm that a very large number of failures do occur at switch-on. Probably the best example is light bulbs, which mostly fail at power-on.

I was reading an article linked from slashdot today about using asterisk to create a home pbx. If you check the article, some telephony cards were mentioned which are extremely cheap - less than your driver cost, and are known to work with asterisk.

True. CRTs still offer better quality than LCD-Plasma, anyway.
