They bought it, according to all accounts, for some $50K. There are other legends, of course, feel free to try to advance your own favorite. Here's a reference to mine:

Now in 1981, $50K was quite a chunk of change for 6 weeks' work. Why I bet some of you COLA choirboys don't make $400K per year even today, which is what that works out to be!
The legend continues with "In 1981, Tim Paterson quit Seattle Computer Products and found employment at Microsoft." which makes it a win-win situation all the way! IBM had a substantial disagreement with MS over the product positioning of Windows vis-a-vis OS-2 to be sure. My own view, from a contemporaneous seat as an IBM Industrial Products Partner at that point in time was that IBM tried to squeeze MS into pulling Windows from the market because IBM wanted to regain their veritable monopoly in the PC world. Note how hard IBM tried to emulate Apple's proprietary lock with the PS-2, OS-2, and Microchannel bus system, well protected with copyrights and patents that would have crippled the emerging cloners. IBM is not your friend in this business, bobo. You should not forget that lesson.
MS has a pretty low price, true. Probably so low that no one could ever hope to face them out of the market and ever recoup the investment that it would take to make that happen. A true cash cow now.
