None of the ones you list were natural monopolies in the US. Railways, telephone, power gen, were enforced monopolies. In the case of the Telcos, the govt *forced* small regional telcos to sell out to what became "Ma Bell" (a foretaste of the Kelo decision) Then you can of course point to a half dozen or so such natural monopolies?
This would be a valid point, if only it weren't bullpoo. The Telcos aren't just competing with each other, they are also competing with wireless, VOIP, and now, cable companies. The market there is communications, not wired communications. We don't even have a landline any more, it was cheaper to go with wireless and cable for internet.
if there are regulations preventing compebreastion, then it *isn't* a natural monopoly, now is it? Or perhaps it could be that the other constraints on business, are restricting compebreastion. The UK isn't exactly a business friendly place these days. Especially with the EU piling regulation upon regulation on a daily basis.
Very few != monopoly. There are relative few car companies (compared to say, manufactures of glbutt bottles) but there's hardly a world wide monopoly. Satellite launches, submarine manufacturers, telephones (first there was Bell, then many) Vacuum tubes, (RCA had numerous patents for years, another govt restriction on compebreastion.) yet they are far from the only manufacturer of them, even in the 1960s. Thousands more examples out there if you just think. Uh, I'd like to point out that the banking industry is about the most regulated industry other than nuclear power plants.
Not really, no. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU-Linux) iD8DBQFC9Hhqd90bcYOAWPYRAselAJ9slNiOb9e-75LZ4uJvwOyD5PjF5ACgtdpV uwEOfrt-zKcBzKvCjxsW65Y= =N6iW -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- Yesterday it worked. Today it is not working. Windows is like that.
