That's why I quoted the original great..parent which I see you've managed to cut from your reply. It's the point at which you changed the subject.

I agree, it's plainly clear that they said "whereas Microsoft's margin is 75% or more". But the margins on what?

I still don't think that it's as simple as you believe it is. Take the upcoming bill before Congress that will allow cable television companies to offer telephone service. (Currently they're not allowed to...

You reply in the context that it's the whole of Microsoft (and thus the whole of a Hardware vendor's profits), but that disregards the context of the original reply.

That's why I quoted the original great..parent which I see you've managed to cut from your reply, so that you didn't have to go searching up the tree.

So there was no need for you to go wasting your "time searching up the post tree...trying to figure out what some post may, or may not, imply." You had it there, right in front of you, yet you cut it without responding to the fact that the implication is definitely that the margin for MS was on their part of the PC, not the whole company.

On Thu, 04 Aug 2005 14:03:29 +0000, billwg Well, you are. m$ HAVE ALWAYS sold the Xbox at a loss. I was right ... and I have excellent reading comprehension. Xbox 360 Creating a Loss for...

What's changing the subject got to do with changing your mind?

The orignal great..parent message was a reply. The message, and the paragraph in particular, to which it replied was about the percentage of the retail price of a PC+OS that represented the OS.

The reply then mentioned that the profit of the hardware manuacturers was about 15% whereas Microsoft's was about 75%.

It is clear enough to me that his use of "Microsoft's" was a reference to the OS portion of the retail sale, and NOT the whole of Microsoft, which is where you came in and said their profits were only about 30%. Perhaps he should have phrased it better as "on a PC sale, the hardware vendors have maybe a 15% margin compared to the OS provider's of 75% or more, on what they provide for that machine." Though he was obviously using the popular thought that a pc = a windows pc and thus converted OS to Windows, but named the manufacturer as there is only one manufacturer of that. To follow your train of thought, IBM is a hardware vendor: is their (overall) profit margin about 15%? If not, why did you not complain about the innaccuracy of that?

...

They won't install them at my house, even if I asked them to for that price.
