On the point, my memory of it all is that the early versions of StarOffice, when they were free from Sun several years ago, did a very good job of reading the .DOC files from Word that I tested. There were some minor cosmetic variances in the display and printing of these documents, but nothing that would cause anyone otherwise wanting to switch to give pause.
