It's OK if you use it for a while and give it a chance.

Polluting what idea specificially? Not in my experience, but let's buttume, for the moment, that that's true. If that's the case, then it's not particularly valuable and you don't really need it, right? The people...

Pluses:

* you can get things done pretty readily. It's actually easy to find some things compared to a crowded KDE on Knoppix menu set. * it has a 'Take a screenshot' utility already in the menus. Always useful. * apps have a consistent look and feel

Minuses:

On Wed, 07 Dec 2005 00:29:18 -0500, DFS As with any new environment. Not everyone will like every feature, but that's life. At least with Linux...

* many of the menu labels describe the apps purpose but not it's name: File Browser, Archive Manager, etc. It just kind of makes Linux feel "dumb" when it's labeled like that, as if you're a newbie searching for a 'Music Player' app. Maybe you can alter the menus in Gnome - I haven't tried. But one thing Linux is good for is making you feel like a smart geek who doesn't need his menu items setup like his Grandma's * the sublimely ridiculous Nautilus program - with the open each folder in a new window. That's a showstopper for me, and I didn't see that you could change it to stay within one window. * far less customizability than KDE. Even though KDE sometimes goes overboard with options, I think it much better captures the "spirit" of Linux.

Whatever I might think, others think differently: I read (in Linux Format I believe) that Gnome ships as the default wm on 2-3 of the Top 10 Linux distros

Apple pie is terrific. Gnome is just tolerable.
