They need a new code-base. I can see them doing a Mac, with a mach kernel and BSD code for utilities, and something like Wine for running old-style binaries.

Whether it's worth it is an interesting question for MS now - if they'd done this perhaps 5 years ago, they might've been able to hand onto their monopoly, as they could've argued a superior product, but that opportunity has now gone. Perhaps they'll be better taking a new code-base into embedded work, like an Xbox which doesn't crash, or fixing the British Rail boards which so often have BSODs on them, when they used to have train times back when the system was unix.
