During that period, I switched from SuSE to Mepis because I couldn't afford to upgrade to a newer SuSE at the... While usually a judgement call, I don't like to put too much "in to" the database. While sometimes you need to incorporate functionality that conceptualy does not belong, but it is something to be avoided. PostgreSQL supports a lot of different langages for functions, and I think Java is supported, but supporting a threaded VM environment in the context of a multi-process db server seems costly.
I don't see how stored procedures simplify code all that much.
