From Windows to Linux
I made two attempts to go from Windows to Linux. The first was entirely a flop. Hardware driver problems. It was with Lindows (Linspire). And it allowed me to trash on this group a while. lol. Goodbye Mr. Gates 337 Whether you agree with the courts attempts to fix the illegal behaviour of Microsoft is not the key issue. Ralph is quite correct in that the courts are attempting to address the complaints... The second attempt was with SuSE, and after the updates crashed a lot and Liam said they mucked with Gnome, I went Fedora Core 3. Goodbye Mr. Gates 335 DFS Of course you'd be suprised, your a CSS drone, you've had to click a EULA for decades now..... The... The software works GREAT. There are a couple of TRICKY things, and I had to install twice (50 Min each), but if you do it in the right order, the software is a pretty awesome. Goodbye Mr. Gates 338 Ralph There never has been only one alternative for PC operating systems. Why do you persist in perpetuating this lie? I see. He didn't explain what... What things? As soon as you finish installing, if you update the packages first (anaconda-YUM) and the kernal second, there are a list of problems that occur. Do it the other way, it works smooth. If you do the kernal update first, you can then select ALL the packages to update. Otherwise, it overloads you with dependency errors.) My printer just worked. (HP PSC 750) My Lexmark printers don't work, so I traded them for more HP Printers. It did not find my 2nd FAT drive, and I can't figure out why it does not. Yet, if you search the web, you find that if you just type this word (file) and enter one line in file, it mounts and works great. My scanner works great. I can now burn CD's. I can now play Music CD's. Most of the trick is the right hardware. If you are a company, buy at walmart (usa). You can get a nice system for $600.00 with monitor. And it will run faster then those high powered HP's. As for free software, this is just awesome. Accounting issues. There is no business accounting programs like Quicken. Before someone gets their panties ruffled, there are some programs (Money Dance, GNU Cash, etc.) but they do not compare. And at first this irked me. Then I thought about it. There are accounting programs online, where they even do the backups. So I don't have to freat over backups in case my hard drive crashes. I can use any system. Updates are automatic and the software is as good as quicken. It is a monthly fee, but you always have the data. Any small business should make this a necessity. Goodbye Mr. Gates Last year we spent far too much time and money dealing with spyware, malware, browser hijackers, viruses and... It is like the online tax programs, where you do your taxes online, file, and next year, it is still there. You just log on, import last years and never have to worry about backups and what happens if you lose it. What about speed? The speed is great! And it does it without planting a lot. You really notice all the crap you grown used to in Windows after a while. There is some MINOR junk to address. Windows has pre-loaders, which will give a faster load time some some apps. Works in Word, and even Open Office has one on Windows. It is a little slower loading, around 14 seconds. Woopie ding. I can do that for the savings. Goodbye Mr. Gates 336 Monti is, of course, a prosecutor the same as Joel Klein for the DOJ, and he is unlikely to... This brings us to the Windows Standard of Word and .doc. The theory is that you want to be able to exchange documents with others. And it goes to send a .doc document. Well, nobody on Windows wants a .doc doc. It can be loaded with germs, i mean viruses. So nobody wants one anyway. In the legal field, it is moslty going .RTF for exchanging files (like on discovery) and .pdf (bankruptcy court). Here is the cool part. Open Office exports as a .pdf and saves as rtf. So you are missing nothing. In summary, this is all HOGWASH. Actually, you win going Linux. You can try it and see if you have hardware issues. If you do, you can try to solve or get new inexpensive systems. Otherwise, you will start to realise you have grown used to trashy software in the Windows world.
