I took wild estimates to see what may look size of usenet backup at Google.. Why Google? Because the initial interest was to see is there any other considerations to keep their web interface to alow easy Reply without quotes, and ask for few clicks to get quotes.
It is nothing that I can and want defend, and COLA wasn't the only group I looked at. The 15 day average is because of my newsreader settings. That are numbers I can see next to the few groups I'm subscribed to. Most of that are various computer and linux groups that doesn't make real average. There is no binaries groups that Google probably doesn't store.
day. COLA is second to linux.kernel group-mailing list they have 5768 subscribed to is 1100 posts-15 days = 73 posts-day, that can be far from real number for whole usenet.
The average byte count per article is just "on sight" estimate. I take your average of 5k per article as good ground. Article count per day is changing trough the time. Now is 380 per day. What was in dial up times? What was average message size at that time? What is the winter, and what would be in the summer?
Too many questions, to little answers :)
