OK, it took a little longer than a few days, but here are the results: utter failure.
Resetting the TCP-IP stack seemed to work - for about 20 seconds. Then the machine grinded to a halt, and wouldn't reboot again. And oh yeah, when starting the "recovery mode" on the installation CD, XP whined about an admin pbuttword which the owner was sure was never set (because XP never asked for it during the install), and rebooted after every three failed attempts. So no go there either - and yet another stupid Windows "feature" to make the user's life hell.
The owner has now brought it into a shop for (yet again) a full reinstall, estimated to cost him another $150. And if that fails, the man said he'd try Linux, or perhaps a Mac.
Summarizing: the man hasn't had full use of his computer for almost six weeks now, seven people have looked into the problem and couldn't solve it, and the total bill will be about $250 when everything is OK again - until the next time something goes wrong. Ah well, the little inconveniences of using Windows ...
Anyway, thanks for the tips, one of them almost worked.
