You will be asked for *your* pbuttword. After entering it, Synaptic will run, click search, and enter some search terms, like Open Office, select packages you want to install, click Apply.
If you haven't done so already, you will probably want to enable universe and multiverse repositories, these allow you to install things like DVD playback, and other stuff that may have legal issues in some jurisdictions. To do this, fire up synaptic as described above, Go to repositories.
You can also do this, by hand, by editing the fileetc-apt-sources.list, just uncomment the lines for multiverse and universe. Either way works. This will give you access to about 18,000 packages, everything from complete development environments, to utilities like fortune.
