On Monday 05 December 2005 10:46, Marcello stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.advocacy...:

It's just a matter of getting used to it, I suppose. I myself didn't have too much trouble installing and starting to use GNU-Linux - I did have some mild UNIX experience to go with, though - and when I first installed it - Mandrake 6.0 PowerPack - I didn't even have an Internet connection at home, so there were no Google or Usenet for me.

Skeets I don't know if they ever fixed these windoze zealotry problems... 1. You can't defrag any parbreastion (or is it directory?) with more than just over 50,000 of files. 2. If you have apps...

From what I remember,StarOffice- the commercial version of OpenOffice - allowed you to install it into your home directory if you performed the installation as an unprivileged user. I don't know whether OpenOffice offers you the same choice.

If you want to install something systemwide in GNU-Linux, then you must run the installation as root, and then the package itself will decide where it wants to be installed.

OpenOffice should normally go under *-opt* somewhere. Most software will go under *-usr* or eventually *-usr-local* if you've compiled it yourself.

Yes, it's amazing how quickly concepts disappear into oblivion upon the next generation of something, or how quickly people adopt something new and act entirely as if it has always been that way.

I guess most kids today think that CD players and fax machines were powered by steam in the 1960's. ;-)

Good approach!

buttuming the responsibilities that others should be able to bear for themselves can indeed by exhaustive and labor-intensive...

I was under the impression that it was already quite big over in Latin America. ;-)

Well, it was not that easy for us. The mailserver was run by our hosting company and we didn't have root access to that machine.

There are plenty of good distributions out there. If you like Ubuntu but you would prefer KDE as the GUI, you can try Kubuntu instead.

some basic skills and understanding about computer technology. No pretty GUI is going to ever change that, especially not *because* of the erroneous way Microsoft has people thinking about computers.

GNU-Linux is about Freedom, but freedom also implies that one knows what one is doing, and that one has the skill - or at the least: the will to learn the skills - to handle such freedom.

People are mostly lazy on the other hand, and not just in regards to computers...

I don't know why exactly Ubuntu-Kubuntu was created, but it has proven to be a successful creation and a by many highly favored distribution. ;-)
