Installed Linux on my first Mac today

Got an old Power G3 donated, so of course I did what any red-blooded Linux geek would do...downloaded Debian PPC netinst iso and commenced to work!

I did briefly fiddle around with the OS that was on the system, but was not at all impressed. Granted, it was only OS 9.1, so not much to be impressed with really.

I've got to say that OpenFirmware thing just seems pretty stupid IMO. To have to boot into an OS just to be able to boot into another OS is just ridiculous. The only workaround I could find required another Mac system and a special cable to be able to access the OpenFirmware and modify it to be able to load the kernel image directly via the Quik bootloader. Just seems really convoluted.

Liam Slider Inherent? So I was born this way and nothing can be done about it? Besides...

Everything seems to have installed ok so far. Still have alot of configuration to finish up, though I just finished setting up X, which was a royal pain. Apt-get was giving me all kinds of headaches until I set proper sources to pull from, but that's not unusual.

This is an older system, so it's not a speed demon by any means. About the same as a PC with equivelant specs. Luckily, I got a model that took a standard IDE HDD and PC 100 168 DIMMs, so I was able to upgrade it a bit before I put Linux on. Networking works fine (obviously), as does X (limited to 800x600 with the builtin monitor, though there is a port for a Mac monitor). Not sure about sound yet, though it appears from online sources that it should work ok once I get alsa configured properly. Don't know about the floppy yet, I've heard there are some issues with them under Linux.

I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but I can say that Linux on a Mac is just...Linux. This is a good thing as far as I can tell, since everything pretty much works just the same as Linux on a PC, once you get past the whole boot issue and the single button mouse (what a PIA!).

Next is to see if I can get KDE installed and set that up. Then I will have a nice little Mac sitting next to my PC on my desktop, both happily running Linux!
