Intel to invest $1B in India 6736

I for one find the notion of "America first" rather parochial; this is, after all, becoming a worldwide economy. The main problems of course with outsourcing, however, are:

1 the time difference. Everything's out of sync by about 12 hours from US to India. By the time US rolls out of bed Monday morning India's already checked out and filled US's in basket.

mlw It doesn't work like that any more. The third world as it used to be known...

2 the communications costs. I'm not sure if long distance is the issue it once was (especially with VoIP) but there are some things that don't transmit well over a wire. It's better than it was, admittedly.

3 the language barrier, although in the case of India the barrier is not nearly as bad as it might be in, say, China. (And even China isn't that bad...but their economy is booming and so, presumably, are the wages to their telecommunications workers. Companies may have to outsource to South Africa, Niger, or the Sudan next...)

Of course, the flip side is that as more jobs are outsourced, more workers in the US are put out of work, creating a backlash.

-- It's still legal to go .sigless.
