Mxsmanic I don't know what I'm hearing, but I hear the hum (kind of a whiny hum) from nearly all CRTs. I've asked my doctor about this and it's not all that unusual. Then...

I can't quite tell if you're really agreeing or disagreeing but pretending to maybe-agree...

Modems and mainframes and server racks don't generate 30kV either, BTW. Monitors probably have some sort of voltage multiplier circuitry; I wonder if they can generate subharmonics of the switchmode supply fundamental, bringing it into audible range.

Bernd Jendrissek I've been know to hear weird things too. I have an IR programmable remote control...

Dolores All my little note does is point out that in the near future it is quite...

That said, I have a piece of equipment in my office which used to generate an awful lot of noise, and it was definitely the switchmode supply. It was the loosely wound transformer (aka inefficient motor), in fact. An engineer from the makers of this equipment was visiting (for another reason) and instantly noticed the noise. He then cannibalized a little capacitor from another obsolete board and soldered it to the supply circuit (maybe across the transformer terminals?) and that almost entirely stopped the noise. I'm guessing the windings bumping into each other were acting as some sort of divide-by-N counter, or a superregenerative receiver, and that adding the capacitor simply damped the parasitic electro-mechanical oscillator enough to quiten it.
