Ian Hilliard I don't think so. What would you or cola know about honesty as...

You will see little in the trade press, which is negative of Microsoft. It is nice to see that some in the financial press is now willing to call a man a man and a spade, a bloody shovel. This honesty is however still thin on the ground in the main-stream press.

Microsoft spends around $4 Billion per year advertising in the trade press of a product that the readers don't actually directly buy. This sheer volume of money makes it the major source of income for many magazines. It is well known that Microsoft will only advertise with a magazine that is "Microsoft friendly". History has shown that "Microsoft friendly" means don't say anything bad about Microsoft or their products or for that matter that alternatives might be better.

I would suggest that you get a clue, but it is clear that you wouldn't have a clue what to do with one if you got it.

Roy Schestowitz Fact is that Microsoft has (and has historically had) a large advertising budget. The whole point of spending money is to reach the media and consumers and bias them towards your...

It may be common, but it is still bribery and corruption.

You are a total fool. I am in the position to speak on CIO responsibilities. I suspect that you are not. A CIO is responsible for getting the most efficient use of information within a company at the lowest possible cost. Where an open source product is capable of meeting the requirements, it should be used. This comes under the heading of lowest possible cost.

I have made no statement that the open source alternatives are best for every problem. They are however the best for many problems. The other thing that most companies seem to have forgotten when it comes to IT is that it is probably in the company rules that there be at least two suppliers for any product being used. Who is the second supplier for MS Windows and MS Office? There is none. Hence, the use of Windows and Office is breaking most company guide-lines. CIO's just like every one else in the company should be holding to the company guidelines.

I have been working in the computer industry for over 25 years and in the radio industry before that. I am a senior project manager, leading software development projects. I have a lot of first hand knowledge.

It is clear that you have no knowledge what so ever. Someone has taught you the dogma that you spout every chance you get and it is clear that you have never stopped to actually question the stupidities that you spout.

Here is the problem. Capitalism is all about companies producing the best possible product for the lowest possible price. For capitalism to work, it is necessary that there be compebreastion. If there is no compebreastion, what you get is akin to communism. You can have what ever the one and only factory is producing at what ever quality it feels like producing. The quality is generally poor because there is no alternative to what they produce anyway.

Microsoft has been in the position for the last eight to ten years where it has no compebreastion. As a result the products have been pretty enough to look at but generally of a very low quality as can be seen by all the exploits. It that time, Microsoft has collected Billions in the bank. This is easy if you are the only game in town. This money is being used to continue to skew the market and avoid balance being returned. I don't ask for the dissolution of Microsoft, but the lack of compebreastion has been bad for Microsoft and extremely bad for IT in general.

This would be the best possible thing as it would return sanity to the IT market. Microsoft would only do this if it had no alternative. Microsoft has had a long period of making huge profits and lower profit margins would require a total restructuring of the company.

I however look forward to the day when this happens because it means that compebreastion has been returned to the IT industry. Some people will continue to use Microsoft products and others will use alternatives. Users and companies will have the right to make a choice as to which product to use, based on their own requirements and not because all the alternatives have been forced out of business by one large predatory company.
