It sucks to be a Linux user

billwg This very much depends on many things. See below. There are many different approaches to this. When you are a consultant, especially on...

I'm trying out the latest version of Mepis on my Asus laptop and I'm not a happy camper because power management doesn't seem to work at all in Linux.

In Windows, I can select a battery optimised power profile to keep the system nice and cool, and the chbuttis fan hardly ever comes on. In Mepis the chbuttis fan has been going full pelt ever since I booted. There's a lot of heat coming out the back too.

I start looking around for some kind of ACPI controls. I find "Power Control" in the KDE control panel but that doesn't give me any control whatsoever. Actually, all of the checkboxes on the ACPI tab are greyed out. There's a "Setup Helper Application" button but when I click on it I get this message:

WTF?! Is this Linux's oh-so-great hardware support? Is this Linux's famed ease of use? Good job I'm not running off the battery otherwise this thing would've died before someone on Usenet had time to tell me to Read The f***ing Manual.

Yeah, yeah -- don't tell me. I bet I can download some compile-n-pray kludge from sourceforge to get 10% of the functionality of the AMD driver. The real question is: why should I bother? Why settle for two-bit drivers for my hardware? Why spend the next six months getting everything to work when I can get it all to work in 2 minutes under Windows? BTW X11 is stuck in 1024x768 which is completely unsuitable for this screen. And I can't get the built-in camera to work either.

Poor show, Linux. I'm booting back into Windows where it looks good, sounds good and plays nice.
