To answer, though, the part of the article that was bullpoo is the part that says "Apparently that amounts to 250,000 local servers and approximately the same number of remote servers". These servers are not on the block at all. The only issue raised was whether to allow only one fork of linux in the network on the few machines that have been discovered running it.
I'm sure the Navy didn't say those things, I have some direct knowledge of what they actually are doing, but that's not important. I don't think the reporter misrepresented the facts, the reporter clearly didn't understand the facts and made a silly commentary based on his misunderstanding. To some it is a handful, to others it may be a chunk, malloc. Take your pick. But it is a small fragment of the whole in either case. Not at all, malloc.
