Used GNOME Enlightenment for the desktop environment. Used VMware to run Windows at the time, purchased it when a hobbiest license was $99(US). Ran Forte Agent with WINE which was real buggy and crashed a lot at the time or maybe it was something I was doing wrong, before discovering SLRN. Mplayer, had a lot of trouble compiling it but finally succeeded. Star Office, purchased it, KDE like interface sucked. Netscape. Pan, was rather limited and crashed a lot back then. Set up VNC and was able to access the desktop remotely while at work - kind of cool, but effectively useless over a dialup connection. Cdrecord, cdrdao, cdwrite, mkisofs et al. Tried some GUI front ends to cd creating software and didn't like them. GNOME Toaster comes to mind, there was another. Same with ripping software, command line tools are hard to beat, I do all my cd burning from the command line today. I could go on and on but am out of time.
