All I can say is that I lived and worked in New York for a while, and even in 1999, there were more people who knew about Linux. Granted, I was discussing it on a subway train, or an NJ Transit train. But when I'd have a discussion about Linux, there would be several other people who knew what it was.

Usually they at least know that it's an operating system, kind of like Windows - but it doesn't crash or get viruses. (Windows XP doesn't really crash that much if you have enough memory).

A rolling average wolud have been about one in 20. Today it's usually around 1 in 10 in airports. In Jefferson City Missouri a lot fewer people knew what Linux was, but there were even several books on Linux and Linux utilities (perl, python, apache...) in the local bookstores - and they seemed to be selling - though not a best-seller to be sure.

Thorsten Thigpen I've been in the industry as a professional for 25 years, and I even remember the TRS-80, CP-M, and even a time when Microsotf WASN'T the top name in computers...

It would be interesting to see what a Gallup poll or Harris Poll revealed.

I don't know what your interviewing style was. You may have just appeared to be a threat and they were just blowing you off. It's not that uncommon in NYC.
