Linux Windows email programs with chat notification 9940
Which is cool, but the question was if, when reading or writing an e-mail, you would know when a buddy logged on or off. I presented the Apple Mail way of doing it - which is a fine way and pretty cool. Since then I it has come up in discussion that several chat clients pop up little messages from the Notification area in XP and similar areas in Linux and OS X. While this is not the same, it offers comparable functionality... I still like that OS X has that feature, and there are minor pros and cons to both methods, but overall I think the question has been satisfactorily answered - you can achieve much the same thing on OS X, Linux, and XP... He can have an extra message pop up, which can be annoying, or have a voice state it, which might not be as clear. The fact that Mail, using AddressBook, "connects" the dots for him is a plus, but, as I say above, it is a minor point. -- I am one of only .3% of people who have avoided becoming a statistic.
