I would consider that Richard Stallman is responsible for free software in general, in that he kind of started it. In that sense, then, perhaps he's responsible. Beyond that, I don't think you can blame RMS for other folks' failings.

In this world of therapied people, sound bites, silky-sweet sitcoms and zero tolerance of anything outside of a norm, then anyone who is principled, as RMS is, is described in unbelievably and unpleasantly disparaging terms.

Having disparaged the 'unbeliever', you can then go on to 'guilt by buttociation' and similarly disparage anyone who tends to agree with him.

Perhaps you should consider that RMS is in favour of free software and user rights, and co-wrote probably the most important document written for years, the GPL.

He's been particularly send in handling a huge development team, possibly the largest which there has ever been. That is a singular achievement.
