Odds of him knowing what an ABA or Transit number is let alone actually knowing these numbers are slim to none. At best perhaps 15-20% of his customers have enough computer knowledge to make electronic payments. Not everyone owns a computer.
My kids have bank accounts. When they baby-sit they get cash or a check. Nobody is going to ask them for their electronic bank info and electronically pay them.
It's the opposite here. For larger companies it's much easier for me and them to take electronic payments. But the guy who comes and mows my lawn simply wants a check. Does everyone there own a computer and is able to use one? If not, how on earth do they pay people electronically without one? Not sure what you're asking but I'm not aware of any bank anywhere that will let you write checks for more than your account. Here it's called "bouncing a check" and it's a no-no.
For certain things like sports programs yes... we have to pay for it. We also pay for things like clbutt-trips, parking permits for cars and etc.
Or I could simply write a check.
It's very legal. I'm not paying the baseball coach. The check is written to be payable to the school. The coach is responsible for collecting the checks and turning them in.
Pity me how? It's simply the way things work in this country. Pity that you are unable to comprehend this.
