When I write a... Larry Qualig I'm sure you agree that cash is not the same thing as a cheque. In the past, getting something like a fifty dollar cheque would mean I would need to leave the cheque to the bank for clearance before I would get the money. It would take days. Are things different over there? Accepting all size cheques would be an awfully great risk for the banks, I'd think. Why? Cash, that I can understand, but cheques which can be misused so easily? Well, we have these amazingly wonderful modern things called telephones (from Latin; 'far' 'talk' )- and even mobile phones - which can also be used to pay bills. Do you not have phones over there? I pay 80 cents a month - about one US dollar - for my bank for the service including both telephone and computer payments and saldo checks. I would have to pay more that that extra per each bill if I wanted to pay them at the bank. How do they make sure? Doesn't it take time to physically handle the cheques at a bank? So one could write a lot of cheques before they start bouncing. With an electronic transfer that is not possible. It is not credit, it is cash. Linux apps like Quicken are badly needed 3382 Timo Pirinen It's 3 days for an in-state check. 5 days for out of state checks to clear. Usually faster since the banks are all computerized. Not the same as cash but... Ah, so it is a problem. Isn't that awful? Over here all school events are payed by the school, which is owned by the city or in case of university training schools the state. That's one reason why the city and the state are allowed to gather taxes, to pay for public services they provide. Why do you not send it to the school then? What if he doesn't turn your check in? What if he loses it? After all, it's a piece of paper, easily misplaced. No, you are wrong. I already told you I remember how things were here during the 70's and 80's. That's how you are doing things now. I definitely would not want to go back there again. -- Timo Pirinen
