Yup, that's an argument you can make, and it's a pretty good one. Used to be 2" was an industry standard but these days it's getting harder and harder to find in studios. If I were doing pop music stuff where tracking and mixing might be done at a dozen different places, I would be much more concerned about compatibility than I am now, too, because I would want to be able to sell to that market.

Again, it's not a matter of equipment costs. Equipment costs are a tiny fraction of the operating costs. Folks get impressed when they see I have a $5,000 2-channel converter, but when you consider that it can be depreciated over 15 years because it doesn't break and it sounds good enough to not need constant upgrading, all things considered it's cheaper in the long run than buying junk.

Absolutely, and that's a very profitable thing if you have the staff to handle a B studio. It's inexpensive, and it brings in customers, and what's most interesting is that having the B studio brings in customers who will later transition to the A room. Also, of course, having gear like that in the B studio allows people to do preproduction or early tracking at home and then bring it into the studio. For a lot of markets that's a huge deal. --scott
