Major component separation

I just tried "konstruct" for the first time. In KDE 2.x I used to download sources and do it by hand. Then I just got lazy and used the distro's version. Anyway, out of curiosity more than anything else, I used it. It was pretty cool. Downloaded everything, configured and made it. Took all night, but it worked. A lot like BSD's "ports" collection.

One of the things I truely hate about most distros is a lack of separation between logical groups of packages. For instance, KDE, there is NO reason why KDE needs to be all mixed in withusr-bin, but they all do it!! It is frustrating. Why can't they take the larger systems, like gnome and kde, and treat them much like X11 (-usr-X11R6), as in,usr-kde3.2 orusr-gnome2.1 orusr-gcc3.3, you get the idea.

Updating KDE on a running system forces you to make a clear decision before you press start where as a separate directory would allow you to rename it (or archive it) run install. If you don't like it, simply restore the old directory.

Obviously, this does not work for numerous scattered and disconnected smaller programs, those can go inusr-bin orusr-misc orusr-local, but having in excess of 2500 programs inusr-bin with no real organization is a problem. The larger "related" applications should be grouped as such.
