Mandrake disappointment 1737Mandrake disappointment 1739 On Fri, 11 Mar 2005 15:26:26 -0700, Snit Is consistency such an absolute necessity? IMO, most apps these days on the main plaforms... On Sat, 12 Mar 2005 13:14:27 -0700, Snit They're all the same. It's not the media players you actually pay for, but the proprietary add-ons and commercial software, manuals, etc. The fact that certain apps aren't included in the Discovery set doesn't mean they are any different from the ones you get in, for instance, Powerpack or a download edition. You just may not get the *same* ones included on the CD(s). Mandrake disappointment 1738 On Fri, 11 Mar 2005 10:22:35 -0700, Snit Of course it is, if you get a download edition. Or a covermount. 10.1 Official is out on one of the magazines, and... You're confusing free and Free, IMO. I mean, free as in price, and Free as in Freedom. Mandrake as a company would naturally like to make a living, so they sell supported distros, manuals, commercial progs, nice boxed sets, membership of the Mandrake Club, etc. The GPL'd software in their distro is always Free, as in Freedom, even though they are charging money for it. But a downloaded edition, which will have in it only Free software, is also free as in at no charge. That's how they can put Mandrake 10.1 Official on a magazine cover and not charge extra for the magazine than the usual cover price. The Free-free thing is what catches out a lot of new Linux users. That's one reason I always capitalise Free (as in Freedom), to distinguish it from free, as in without price, given away, not charged for. -- Kier
