They hated them both... but I do not think they really understood the idea that it was running from the CD and that was the slow down. They were quickly frustrated...

Some people in that age range seem to catch on fairly quickly... some do not. It could be that Linux is a lot easier to catch on to than is Windows - there is not the fear of breaking it as much or of malware. Still, OS X often makes a *huge* difference...
Do you have screen shots you can share... main windows plus "standard" dialogs?
If you have apps that fit your WM Linux seems to do this fairly well. I have not seen a distro that does this well... then again, there are a *lot* of distros I have not played with - even very common ones.

What distro would you suggest? The ones I have played with - which is not many - have simply not been up to the quality (for this purpose) I would be comfortable with suggesting to my students clients.
