Mandrake disappointment 1748On Mon, 14 Mar 2005 17:28:48 -0700, Snit The greatest drawback with Live CDs is that they naturally are running off the CD, and uncompressing software on the fly, and it's best to have a fair bit of memory. Though I've sometimes achieved quite reasonable results on machines with less the 256 megs. With Knoppix, and also with Slax (possibly also with some of the others) there are a couple of ways to get round this drawback. If you have an otherwise slowish machine which has enough ram, you can do a copy2ram at boot time (entering this at the boot prompt). This will copy the whole disc into memory, and it will run much faster. Obviously you need enough ram to cover the size of the CD, plus some extra for running the software. The other was is to physically copy the iso to a hard-drive (not install it, just copy it), and run it from there. Take a look at the knoppix cheat codes for more info. I've done the copy2ram with Slax, and it worked excellently. As for Gnome - did they give a reason *why* they thought it ugly? I'm not a huge fan of Gnome's look and feel, myself, but lots of people do like it. I suppose it's a matter of what appeals ot a person. I started out on Gnome, but when I saw KDE, I quickly became a fan. Could be. If you can get them hooked on Live CDs, though... I find them tremendous fun. If you find Knoppix is too sluggish on the hardware you have available, Slax would be a definitely better choice for demonstration. I've not experience of OSX, though screenshots I've seen look nice. -- Kier
