I think our Microsoft Mavens¨ would be interested in this statement:
"Monopolists shouldn't have to cooperate like this. These days Microsoft needs all the help it can get. The company has been pushed to the sidelines as new areas of technology have boomed. Google dominates ad-supported search. Apache, a software project of the open source movement, claims the majority of the Web server market. The iPod is stealing away fans of Windows-flavored digital entertainment."
And yet MS is still girding for battle:
"Smith has Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer's blessing to instill collaboration among all Microsofties--even if it has to be drilled into them in strict legalese. Over the past three and a half years Smith has upped the number of lawyers at Microsoft by 68% to 325. Many of them will work inside product groups to give legal advice on how to strike deals with rivals large and small."
I've been thinking the same thing. The surface it sits on seems to make a difference. It lasts longer on a flat table surface than on my lap...
I like how the author spells "knife" as "strike deals with".
