The law's been like that here for as long as I've been around. We have an organisation called the "Advertising Standards Authority", the ASA, whose role it is to act on Consumer Debt complaints about misleading advertising. They have teeth, too, and can imposeveryhefty fines. Interestingly, so far, nobody's had a go in the software arena, of course, the software companies don't make huge claims about their products because the ASA is breathing down their necks...

Been there for decades - but I'm glad you're joining us - it's the right place to be.

Incidentally, comparative advertising is also illegal here, eg., youcannothave your product and a compebreastor's being directly compared, as you frequently see in the US. The reason being that it would be impossible for anyone to be impartial, so it's not allowed. You are only allowed to extol the virtues of your own product, although you can refer to others in a general sense (eg., outperforms all other leading brands, or something like that).
