Since they are willing to dump AOL, Linux is a viable alternative, although the Mac would probably be better suited for them IMHO. I say this because whenever there is something requires administration on Linux - whether with printing, administering permissions, configuring browser or application plugins, etc. - you are going to get a phone call. Yes, using Linux on the desktop has become easier than ever, but even with Ubuntu and CentOS, things occur that require *nix administration knowledge and even the occasional command-line.

I've set up SUSE 10.0, CentOS, and Ubuntu for three different relatives (mom, aunt, nephew) as well as my own daughter (but she's only 4). These are some of the most usable Linux desktops, but I still get a number of calls every week - mostly regarding application and printing functionality.

My mother-in-law went from Windows to Mac - I helped her hook it up, but after that, she's done everything else on her own. She quickly adapted to the Mac environment and can administer - even troubleshoot - with no help whatsoever.

I'm a huge *nix advocate, but the user comes first. What will work best for them?

Wow! I'm a bit surprised that they'd have the idea of dumping Windows. So many people simply buttume...

Regarding a Linux financial app, Moneydance is the best I've seen. It's not free, but it is by far the most capable.

HTH & good luck ~
